承担国家973计划、国家重点研发计划、国家科技重大专项、自然科学基金委国家重大研究计划重点项目、集成项目、国家杰出青年基金、重点国际合作项目等以及国家传染病重大专项等国家级科研任务和军队重大研究计划等省部级科研任务。以通讯（或第一）作者在Nat Genet、Ann Oncol、J Clin Oncol、JNCI、Gut、Gastroenterology、Hepatology、Advanced Science等发表SCI收录论文158篇，其中超过10分39篇，超过20分11篇，他引1.4万次，2019-2023连续5年被评为高引学者。成果入选44项国内外临床指南和74本教科书和专著。获首届上海市杰出人才。以第一完成人获得国家自然科学奖二等奖（2019）、教育部自然科学一等奖（2018）、上海市科技进步一等奖（2018）、军队科技进步一等奖2项(1999-1,2003-5)、二等奖2项(2006-1,2015-1)，中华医学会等一级学会科技二等奖4项（2009-2019,均第一），获得国家科技进步二等奖和创新团队奖共3项。获得国家专利授权和软件著作权23项。

Undertaking important scientific research projects such as the National 973 Program, National Key Research and Development Program, National Major Science and Technology Special Projects, Key Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Integrated Projects, National Outstanding Youth Fund, Key International Cooperation Projects, as well as the National Major Infectious Diseases Special Project and other provincial and ministerial level scientific research tasks such as major research plans of the military. As the corresponding (or first) author, Prof. Cao published 158 SCI-indexed papers in journals such as Nat Genet, Ann Oncol, J Clin Oncol, JNCI, Gut, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Advanced Science, etc., including 39articles with the IF more than10 points, 11 articles with IF more than 20 points. The articles were with 14,000 citations. Prof. Cao was rated as a highly cited researcher for 5 consecutive years from 2019 to 2023. The achievements have been included in 44 domestic and international clinical guidelines and 74 textbooks and monographs. Awarded as the Shanghai Outstanding Talent. As the first completor, Prof. Cao was awarded the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award (2019), the First Prize of the Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education (2018), the First Prize of Science and Technology Progress of Shanghai (2018), two First Prizes of Military Science and Technology Progress (1999-1, 2003-5), two Second Prizes (2006-1, 2015-1), and four Second Prizes of Science and Technology from first-tier societies such as the Chinese Medical Association (2009-2019), and received a total of three Second Prizes of National Science and Technology Progress and Innovation Team Awards. Granted 23 national patent authorizations and software copyrights.
