2001年获全国高中生物竞赛一等奖,2006年获四川大学生物技术学士学位,2011年获清华大学生物学博士学位。后于美国加州大学圣迭戈分校(UCSD)诺贝尔生理与医学奖得主实验室和新加坡科技局(A*STAR)从事博士后研究。
2015年入职同济大学担任教授、课题组长(PI)。先后入选教育部高层次人才青年项目、中组部国家青年特聘专家、浙江省“千人计划”特聘专家、江苏省双创人才、江西省双千人才计划。先后作为负责人承担国家重点研发计划、国家自然科学基金优秀青年基金、国家自然科学基金国际合作专项、国家生物药技术创新中心“揭榜挂帅”项目、江苏省重点研发计划等重要项目。
左为团队深入开展基于成体干细胞的肺、肾和心脏等重要脏器的再生修复、功能增强及衰老逆转研究。提出器官再生是其发育过程重演的创新理论,开创了R-Clone药品级前体细胞分离扩增技术,负责三项国家卫健委干细胞临床研究备案项目,主导完成世界上首个肺前体细胞移植临床试验。论文成果发表在Nature、Science Translational Medicine、AJRCCM、EMBO Mol Med、Protein Cell等高水平期刊上, 单篇通讯作者论文被引超1700次。开发的全球首创肺前体细胞1类新药REGEND001获国家药监局批件进入II期临床,目前已成功完成上百例患者受损肺脏的再生修复治疗。相关成果入选2018年中国医药生物技术年度十大进展,2023年欧洲呼吸学会(ERS)发布的全球年度三项重要进展。个人2018年获国家刊物官方评选为“中国年度十大创新先锋”, 2020年获江苏医药科技进步奖(第一完成人) ,2021年入选中国“科学家创业先锋”榜单Top5, 2023年获蔚澜创新青年科学家奖,同年入选树兰基金会“生命科学新力量年度人物”。
