The obstetrics team led by Director Liu Ming conducts clinical and research work under the guidance of Professor Duan Tao, a distinguished expert in obstetrics and gynecology. As the leading specialist in preterm birth, Director Liu Ming has established a preterm prevention and management system centered on cervical length screening, and has built high-level cervical cerclage and related techniques into the team's signature clinical brand.
In terms of discipline development, Director Liu Ming spearheaded the formation of the "Shanghai Oriental Preterm Birth Rescue Alliance," uniting more than 200 institutions across the country to promote standardized diagnosis and treatment. The team has also contributed to the development of multiple national clinical guidelines and expert consensus statements, and has continuously organized national preterm birth conferences and training programs to drive the standardization and academic advancement of the field. The team comprises one Class A Municipal Young Health Talent and one Clinical Research PI, two postdoctoral researchers, four doctoral and master's students, and two research nurses. Three additional clinicians are deeply involved in research activities, bridging clinical practice and scientific inquiry to form a well-integrated talent pipeline.
The team's research focuses on the comprehensive clinical prevention and treatment of preterm birth and preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), as well as the underlying biological mechanisms, with particular emphasis on maternal-fetal immune regulation, amniotic epithelial cell function, and the molecular mechanisms governing fetal membrane integrity. In parallel, the team is advancing the development of a dedicated preterm birth database and pregnancy cohort studies to continuously accumulate high-quality clinical data; conducting randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to guide clinical practice with high-level evidence; and actively expanding into medical artificial intelligence, exploring the application of intelligent technologies in obstetric care, education, research, and management — driving the discipline toward digital and intelligent transformation. The team fosters a warm and supportive environment, placing student development at the heart of everything it does. In addition to Director Liu Ming's personal mentorship, each student is paired with a dedicated one-on-one supervisor who provides close, individualized guidance throughout every stage — from research design and clinical training to laboratory work and thesis writing. With a culture of collaboration and mutual support, every student who joins the team is empowered to grow rapidly and reach their full potential.
