Prof. Zhu Led 15 projects including the National Key Research and Development Program on Stem Cell and Translation Research, National Natural Science Foundation of China, and various provincial, ministerial, and university-level research topics, published over 130 papers, more than 50 of which are indexed in the Science Citation Index (SCI), and contributed to the development of 11 clinical guidelines or consensuses.
Served as the chief editor, Prof. Zhu completed one English-language monograph, participated in the editing of 11 Chinese monographs, and translated two monographs. Furthermore Prof. Zhu obtained 13 patents.
Prof. Zhu served as a young editorial board member for the first and second editions of Burns & Trauma(Top publication in the field of burns), and as an editorial board member for the Chinese Journal of Trauma and Repair (Electronic Edition) and Thrombosis and Hemostasis , and a corresponding editorial board member for the Chinese Journal of Burns and Wound Repair(Top Chinese publications in the field of burns and coagulation).
Prof. Zhu acted as a reviewer for the National Natural Science Foundation of China, nominated for ‘Shulan Medical Youth Award’ and ‘WangZhengguo Traumatology Award’ for outstanding contribution. The lead-authored "National Expert Consensus on Prone Position Treatment for Adult Burns (2022 Edition)" has been recognized as one of the Top 300 Guidelines/Consensus Statements of 2022 and has been awarded the "Transparency in Guideline Development Award." Recognized as an advanced individual for the "Diagnostic Standard for Coagulation Dysfunction" group standard. Prof. Zhu awarded the ‘Outstanding Corresponding Editorial Board Member’ of the Chinese Journal of Burns.
1.Since 2006, attention has been directed towards the dynamics of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their derivatives in treatment of lung injury by Prof. Zhu and his team, leading to an innovative summary of the six major mechanisms by which MSCs treat inhalation injury. The dose-response relationship of inhaled exosomes derived from umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs-Exos) in treating acute lung injury (ALI) in mice has been elucidated by Prof. Zhu and his team, revealing an ‘inverted U-shaped’ dose-effect relationship and its potential mechanisms. Multiple batches of UCMSCs have been subjected to clinical studies to assess their safety and efficacy, establishing a comprehensive safety management and efficacy evaluation system for clinical stem cell use. A standardized and operational stem cell therapy protocol has been developed, adhering to clinical norms and requirements, to ensure the safe and effective application of stem cells in clinical settings. This protocol encompasses the entire process from stem cell preparation to administration, including quality control, safety monitoring, and efficacy assessment, to optimize patient outcomes in lung injury treatments.
2.Focusing on burns and trauma related to lung injuries, Prof. Zhu have systematically carried out basic research and clinical practice. This has led to the proposition of a stem cell prevention and treatment strategy based on the understanding of ALI mechanisms and early warning capabilities with the aim to establish an integrated network for early warning and effective treatment, enhancing the management of such critical conditions.
3.Prof. Zhu and his team have been among the first in China to conduct basic research and clinical translation on coagulopathy after burns and trauma. 1) To revealed the early coagulation characteristics and predictive value after burns and trauma, proposing diagnostic criteria for burn-induced coagulopathy. 2) Focusing on thrombocytopenia and venous thromboembolism (VTE) in critically ill patients and special populations, Prof. Zhu and his team have proposed an anticoagulation philosophy and strategy directed towards immunothrombosis, neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), and NETosis in the context of sepsis-induced coagulopathy (SIC) and shock-associated disseminated intravascular coagulation (SA-DIC). They have led and participated in the formulation of multiple Chinese expert consensus guidelines on coagulation-related issues in severe burns and trauma, and Prof. Zhu is the chief editor of the book ‘Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation’.
