Tongji University can be traced back to 1907 when the German Medical School was founded by Erich Paulun, a German doctor. The school later grew into one of the seven earliest national universities in China, and is known for its schools of science, engineering, medicine, liberal arts and law. TUSM set up four research centers as followings: Brain and Spinal Cord Innovation Research Center, Cardiology Research Center, Cancer Research Center and Stem Cell Innovation Research Center.

In the 1950s, schools and departments of universities of higher learning in China were reorganized, and the Tongji University School of Medicine (TUSM) was moved away from Shanghai to Wuhan. Despite this, Tongji never stopped pursuing medical science.

In April 2000, Tongji University merged with Shanghai Railway University whose medical school served as the basis for restoring “TUSM.” In this way, Tongji found its root in medical science again.

In the past 10 years, Tongji has made remarkable achievements in many sub-disciplines of clinical medicine such as stem cells, translational medicine, etc. For example, the university was in charge of many national key R&D programs and researchers from Tongji have published more than 10 papers in some of the world’s best journals like Nature, Cell and Science, etc.

In 2016, TUSM ranked the 20th of the medical schools in the whole country, indicating the renaissance of Tongji University’s medical science programs.
