They are soldiers in white, known as "the bravest people who go towards danger". They are the real Tongji heroes. Since New Year's Eve on January 24, a total of 49 medical staff from Tongji hospitals have joined the first and second Shanghai medical teams in the battle against coronavirus in Wuhan and other epidemic-affected areas in Hubei Province. They are from the hospitals affiliated to Tongji University including the East Hospital, Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital, the Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, the Yangpu Hospital, Shanghai Fourth People's Hospital, the Putuo People's Hospital and Shanghai Rehabilitation Hospital.

As soon as Shanghai government’s decision to support Wuhan with medical aid was released, the medical staff from Tongji hospitals got ready to give up their vacation and cancel their spring holiday plans. They applied to fight against coronavirus in the frontline in Wuhan. Some of them spent their spring festival in hospitals at Wuhan without having the traditional reunion dinner with their family.

On January 26, the China International Emergency Medical Team (Shanghai) which was established by the East Hospital, applied to the medical authorities to build a mobile emergency hospital at Wuhan.
