International Brain Initiative Coordinating Body Meeting Held Successfully

On March 19 to 20, 2019, International Brain Initiative Coordinating Body Meeting jointly hosted by the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Science and Technology and China Biotechnology Development Center & Chen Tianqiao Foundation and Kavli Foundation was successfully held in Shanghai.

Chen Linhao, deputy director of the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Zhang Xinmin, director of China Biotechnology Development Center attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. Pei Gang, academician of Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Duan Shumin, academician of Zhejiang University, Zhang Xu, academician of Shanghai Brain Science and Brain-like research Center, Professor Jan Bjaalie and Professor Shigeo Okabe, Co-chairmen of the strategy committee of International Brain Initiative (IBI), as well as over 80 representatives of the brain science program of America, Canada, European Union, Australia, South Korea and Japan, the European Federation of Neurological Societies(EFNS) and other academic groups attended the meeting.


The participants discussed the progress of brain science initiative in different countries, the working mechanism and main responsibilities of IBI, and the future development orientation, operation mode and implementation route of IBI. Linda Richards, Chairman of the Australia Brain Science Alliance, and Caroline Montojo, Head of Brain Initiative of the American Kavli Foundation  respectively introduced the organizational structure, vision, responsibilities and overall working schedule of IBI; The representatives of Brain Science initiative from different countries introduced the basic situation, implementation progress and future development planning of theirs. Academician Pei Gang, Academician Zhang Xu and Prof. Luo Minmin introduced the main research progress and significant measures in the field of brain science in China in recent years.

During the session, centering on promoting international cooperation and new discoveries and technological progress in brain science, and improving human welfare, the experts also extracted the future focuses of IBI based on the existing work basis, including the establishment of innovative cooperation mechanism conducive to the transformation and application of research results, attaching importance to data privacy related to brain and cognition and  multidirectional data sharing, establishing a regulatory mechanism in line with scientific ethics and promoting the education and popularization of achievements in the field of brain science.


This meeting is the first coordination meeting held in China since the establishment of IBI in 2017. It has received positive response and unanimous praise from representatives of Chinese and foreign parties. It has laid a solid foundation for promoting cooperation and exchanges between China and relevant institutions and departments of other countries in this field and promoting Chinese scientists to participate in international brain science programs in a wider range and in the wider aspects.

The meeting has received support from Shanghai Brain Science and Brain-like Research Center and Tongji University Schoo of Medicine/ Tongji Hospital.
