The year 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the great new China, and this May marks the 112th anniversary of the founding of Tongji University. Meanwhile，2019 is also the 110th anniversary of Erich Paulun`s death, the founder of Tongji University and German Medical School. After years of preparation, the History Museum of TUSM finally opened in such a special year. This is not only a tribute to the birth of our motherland and university, but also a deep memory and commemoration of Dr. Erich Paulun.

In the morning, the opening ceremony of the History Museum of TUSM was held on the first floor of Taihe Building, Tongji University Hubei Campus. Feng Shenhong, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Tongji University, Zhu Guangjie, former Vice President of Tongji University, former President of Shanghai Railway University(SRU)and former President of Shanghai Railway Medical School(SRMS), Xu long, former Vice President of SRU, President and Party Secretary of Medical School of SRU, former Vice President of SRMS, Fan Jincheng, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the Commission of Science, Technology and Economy of Pudong New Area, former Secretary of the Youth League Committee of SRMS, and director of the student Work Department (Division), Lin Jie, the alumni representative and the Deputy Director of the United Front Work Department of Jing'an District, Zhang Huaming, the Curator of Tongji University History Museum, Jiang Longfei, special engaged consultant of TUSM Museum of History, and former Director of Publicity Department of Shanghai Municipal Archives Bureau, Ms. Zhao Jie, alumni representative, Zheng Jialin, Dean of TUSM attended. The ceremony was presided over by Zhang Jun, the Party Committee Secretary of TUSM. More than 60 staff representatives, alumni representatives who have provided clues, donated funds and articles for the preparation of the museum, teachers and students attended and witnessed the important moment on the spot together.

Zheng Jialin, Dean of TUSM, first delivered the welcome speech and introduced the museum. He compared the tradition of Tongji medicine to a century-old tree with deep roots, while the medicine school is the new bud on the tree. The bud draws from the profound historical background and develops prosperously. The mseum embodies the cultural tradition and education achievements of Tongji medicine for more than 110 years. The museum is divided into three parts, respectively showing the development process of TUSM in the stage of the old Tongji University School of Medicine, Shanghai Railway Medical School and today's TUSM. On behalf of the school, he expressed sincere thanks for the leadership and support of the university and for the concern and help of the alumni.

Zhu Guangjie, former Vice President of Tongji University, said in his speech that Shanghai Railway Medical School`s experience and cultural tradition accumulated in the development are of reference for the future development of the school. Today, TUSM is growing sturdily with new vitality and energy. As a participant in the reconstruction of Tongji Medicine, he felt very pleased. He sincerely hope that the medicine school can find a way of development in light of its own characteristics. Never forget its original heart, keep its mission in mind, and cultivate unswervingly builders and successors of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era. On the basis of deep understanding of precious historical materials, it is hoped that the school should inherit Tongji spirit and compose a new chapter in the development of TUSM.

Feng Shenhong, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Tongji University, delivered an affectionate congratulation speech, saying that the four characters "dream begins with medicine" on the museum name wall not only means the dream of the school begins with "medicine", but also implies the history of Tongji University. In the blood of Tongji always rushes the mission to serving the country with engineering and curing the sickness in the world with medicine. President Xi Jinping once said that Tongji's 100 years are the 100 years of devotion of the heart and soul to the motherland's science and education. After moving to Wuhan bodily, Tongji has made great contributions and sacrifices, more importantly, the contributions to the cause of science and education of China. Under the arduous efforts of previous leaders of the university, the medical specialty got reconstructed in 2000. Under the inspiration of Tongji medical spirit, it has undergone tremendous changes and achieved a lot of results. The museum displays Tongji spirit and Railway Medical spirit. The predecessors have set the summit and benchmark for us, so that the latecomers can establish new goals and inject new passion in here. He hoped that through the establishment of the museum, Tongji medicine school can go further under the encouragement so to return to the apex of medicine research and surpass the predecessors.

Zhang Jun, the Party Committee Secretary of TUSM, said in his speech that today's ceremony is simple but solemn. The German Medical School founded by Dr. Punlun in Shanghai in 1907 was the initiation of Tongji medical specialty. Following the development of our country and the university, and with the concern of the previous leaders of Tongji University, TUSM has gone through 112 years of ups and downs. As an important position for the construction of the school culture, the museum will help to enhance the sense of identity and cohesion of teachers, students, staff and alumni, and inspire everyone to strive for the revival of Tongji medicine.

In the end, the opening ceremony ushered in the most important chapter. Feng Shenhong, Zhu Guangjie, Xu long, Fan Jincheng, Zheng Jialin and Zhang Jun jointly lit the name wall of the History Museum of TUSM, marking the official opening of the museum. Then the leaders, guests, alumni and teachers and students visited the museum as the first audience. Visitors stopped before pictures and captions, recalling the past and the history. The present and the future were marvelously connected because of figures, and warmth and passion surged up among them.

History is a mirror, which lights up the present and the future. The spirit gathered by the museum is the spiritual driving force for the development of the school. TUSM will adhere to the principle of ‘virtue, sincerity, pragmatism, and learning’, remain true to our original aspiration and keep our mission firmly in mind. We will forge ahead to realize our goal of building a world-class medical school and make new contributions to Healthy Shanghai Initiative and Healthy China Initiative.
