On the afternoon
of October 20th, Dr. Howard Bergman, assistant dean of Canadian McGill
University Faculty of Medicine, director of General Medicine; Dr. Marion Dove, director
of Resident Training Program of General Medicine; Dr. Tibor Schuster, director of
Ph.D. program of General Science; and Dr. Gemma Cheng, a clinical professor of General
Medicine, visited TUSM. Prof. Zhang Xiaoqing, associate dean of Tongji
University Graduated School, and Prof.Zheng Jialin, dean of TUSM, met with
visiting guests at Taihe Building in North Campus. Zeng Ying, deputy secretary
of the Party Committee of TUSM; Shen Huixia, director of TUSM Office of
International Education and Cooperation; Wang Hao, director of General Medicine
Department of Affiliated Tongji Hospital, and Zhao Xinxin, a teacher of General
Medicine Faculty, attended the meeting.
Prof. Zheng
Jialin, warmly welcomed the Canadian visitors and introduced the achievements
of TUSM in recent years in terms of disciplinary development, teacher team, teaching
conditions, international cooperation, and so on. Meanwhile, he also pledged to
undertake social responsibility and cultivate high-quality general practitioners.
Zhang Xiaoqing said
that Tongji University will provide resources to support and encourage
scientific research cooperation between the two universities through various
forms such as international forums, visiting scholars, and postgraduate joint
training.
Prof. Howard introduced
the experience of McGill's development of general medicine. They dedicate to improve
clinical teaching ability and promote community-based, patient-focused general
research. They sincerely hope to learn from each other and create a win-win
Tongji-McGill general medical brand.
The main contents
of the talks include: the general practitioner training system of McGill
University, the key areas of general medical research, the implementation plan
of mixed teacher training program, the management process and structure of
continuing education for general medicine; covering the whole cultivation process
of general philosophy and basic skills of every student, phased goals of
resident training and clinical resource allocation. During this visit, McGill
University delegation also hosted the 10th General Medical Forum-McGill
University Sub-forum, and visited the Yangpu Hospital affiliated to Tongji
University and Affiliated Huamu Community Health Service Center to learn more
about Chinese basic medical care and training status of general medical.
On the same day,
the two sides formally signed a memorandum of cooperation in a friendly and
joyful atmosphere, laying a firm foundation for the follow-up advancements in
the fields of teacher training, student exchange and scientific research
cooperation.
Before the meeting
started, Dean Zheng accompanied the delegation to visit Museum of History in
North Campus. He introduced long history of TUSM and achievements of
comprehensive development. He hoped to learn from history, deepen cooperation
and realize the revival of Tongji Medicine.
McGill University
was founded in 1821 and nowadays has 22 departments and 4 affiliated hospitals,
owning more than 340 undergraduate programs and over 250 doctoral and master
programs. McGill University has ranked first in Canadian universities for a
long time, and ranked 43rd in 2019 USNews, 44th in 2019 Times, 35th in 2020 QS.
McGill University Faculty of Medicine has a great reputation, and many scientists
in McGill have won the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology. Dr. Bethune, who
is familiar to Chinese people, also studied and worked at the McGill University
Affiliated Hospital.
