Recently, Health News announced the top 10 domestic medical technology news and the top 10 international medical technology ne020. The important results achieved by Shanghai Key Laboratory of Tuberculosis of Tongji University School of Medicine in research on immune escape mechanism of Mycobacterium tuberculosis were selected as one of the top 10 domestic medical technology news in 2020.

Research results on immune escape mechanism of Mycobacterium tuberculosis selected as one of the top 10 domestic medical technology news of 2020

The research results were published online in the leading international academic journal Nature on January 16, 2020, with Tongji University School of Medicine as the first affiliation. A new study published online in Nature by the team of Professor GE Baoxue of Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital and Academician RAO Zihe of ShanghaiTech University shows that the Mycobacterium tuberculosis has a protein that is so "smart" it can use the body's protein molecules to attack its own immune system, which can lead to tuberculosis. Studies have shown that the secreted protein Rv0222, an important virulence factor of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, can recruit anti-inflammatory protein molecules and block the host's anti-tuberculosis immune pathways only when catalyzed by the host’s ubiquitin ligase and by undergoing ubiquitination. This present study broadens the understanding of the ubiquitination system in controlling infectious diseases, and also provides a complete picture of the immune escape mechanism of Mycobacterium tuberculosis using components of the host to defend against attack.

The reason given for the selection is that tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection is still one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide, and a deeper understanding of the pathogenesis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is key to the prevention and control of tuberculosis. The study used an innovative, function-based screening to find new effector proteins of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, clarifying that Rv0222 can suppress the host inflammatory response and provide an effective and feasible screening method for the study of the immune function mechanism of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Since 2015, Health News has organized the review of the "Double Top 10" medical technology news awards at home and abroad during six consecutive years. For this year’s international medical technology news selection, news was selected through data retrieval and review by experts and scholars for preliminary screening and view, and final review. The selection panel consisted of 18 experts and scholars from the fields of basic medicine, clinical medicine, public health, traditional Chinese medicine and pharmacy. The domestic medical technology news included those about findings completed mainly by Chinese scholars that was both published in such journals as Science, Nature, The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine, and reported by one or more of the 20 domestic mainstream media and portals such as Health News, Guangming Daily, Science and Technology Daily. A total of 93 news articles were selected for consideration.
