Establishing an International High-end Medical Service Platform - Shanghai Tongji Hospital International Medical Services Launches

On November 26, Shanghai Tongji Hospital International Medical Services was officially inaugurated at the New Hongqiao International Medical Center in Minhang. The ceremony was attended by officials such as CHEN Ting, Director of the Planning and Development Division, and MI Jihong, Second-level Researcher of the Medical Administration and Management Division from the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, along with key representatives from Tongji Hospital, including XU Shuzhang, Secretary of the Party Committee, CHENG Yingsheng, President, GAO Yuan, Vice President, HUA Yan and WU Denglong, Deputy Party Secretaries, LI Dong, Vice President, ZHOU Jin, Chief Accountant, and YANG Jie, Chairman of the New Hongqiao International Medical Center. YANG, CHENG and CHEN delivered remarks successively. CHEN and XU jointly unveiled the plaque for the International Medical Services. GAO presided over the launching ceremony.

The Tongji Hospital International Medical Services was established in response to the call of Shanghai Municipal Government and municipal health system for the development of international medical services, and to implement the international medical tourism service model in public hospitals. Leveraging the century-long medical expertise of Tongji Hospital and the policy advantages of New Hongqiao International Medical Center, the International Medical Services serves as a comprehensive international high-end service platform integrating examinations, treatment and health management.

In her speech, CHEN stated that the establishment of the International Medical Services at Tongji Hospital aligns with the national strategy of high-level openness to contribute to high-quality development. High-quality international medical services can promote international exchanges and the development of the biomedical industry, achieving the mutual empowerment of healthcare, business insurance and industrial development. She also expressed her hope that the collaborative model between social and public hospitals in medical services will continue to improve in the future. YANG said that the New Hongqiao International Medical Center is one of the national bases for health and medical tourism, and hopes that the cooperation with Tongji Hospital can further promote the development of the international medical tourism industry. CHENG stressed that Tongji Hospital will further expand its international medical services while adhering to its public hospital services. By deepening its cooperation with international high-quality medical resources, the hospital aims to enhance its service levels and quality, providing personalized medical services for patients in Shanghai.

The Tongji Hospital International Medical Services consists of two parts: the main department and the branch. The main department, located at the Xincun Road, deals mainly with surgical inpatient treatment and the management of complex and challenging cases. The branch focuses on outpatient treatment, minimally invasive day surgery and health management.

The International Medical Services is equipped with large equipment such as PET-CT, linear accelerator (LA), high-end MR, CT, DSA, and precision system facilities such as integrated hybrid operating rooms and abdominal endoscopic surgery systems (surgical robots). Additionally, it features advanced facilities 4K3D high-definition laparoscopes, digital high-definition endoscopic systems, magnetic and electrical stimulation therapy equipment, and magnetic proton therapy devices.

The International Medical Services adopts the “one-stop” diagnosis and treatment model based on the principles of “general practice for the initial consultation, specialized treatment, multidisciplinary collaboration, and whole process management”. General outpatient services are available all day and specialized outpatient services are provided through one-on-one appointments. Additionally, there are dedicated commercial insurance officers who offer personalized services. The target client mainly includes high-end commercial insurance customers, as well as some self-paying customers. This encompasses, but is not limited to, foreign patients, overseas Chinese, diplomats and their families, employees of international enterprises and their families, international students and global travelers, etc.

The International Medical Services boasts an extensive team of clinical specialist physicians, including foreign physicians, clinical experts, and a team of young returnee physicians from Tongji Hospital. The department has appointed renowned international experts, such as Kurt Fritzsche, Professor of Psychosomatic Medicine from the University of Freiburg in Germany, Claus Cursiefen, Professor of Ophthalmology from the University of Cologne in Germany, Dirk Dressler, Professor of Neurology from the Hannover Medical School in Germany, and Walter Paul Weber, Professor of Breast Surgery from the University Hospital Basel in Switzerland. These experts conduct regular consultations at the department.

The International Medical Services focuses on key departments, including national clinical key specialty construction projects such as orthopedics, a discipline of paramount importance in the Shanghai Municipality, and hematology, a discipline in the national clinical key specialty construction project. Additionally, it encompasses Shanghai Municipality’s key supportive disciplines such as psychosomatic medicine and rehabilitation medicine. Featured medical programs include CAR-T therapy for blood diseases, rehabilitation of spinal cord injuries, digestive endoscopy examinations and treatments, organ rehabilitation, urinary tract reconstruction, dystonia treatment, facial anti-aging procedures, traditional Chinese acupuncture and massage, wound repair, gynecological laparoscopic surgery, urology microsurgery, etc.

So far, the International Medical Services has collaborated with 24 international commercial insurance companies to open direct billing services, and provides various language support for foreign patients.
